What's in a name?

The Maori name for Auckland is "Tamaki Makau Rau", which means a maiden with 100 lovers. Nice. I guess that means that it's a place that is much desired and fought over.

The origin of the name "Waiheke" is debatable. Some scholars believe that it means "Cascading Waters", which doesn't make much sense since Waiheke has no running rivers or water falls. Other scholars point out that "Wai" means memory and "heke" means migrant, so it could be "a land of migrants who remember where they came from". Very fitting for us.
