New Boat

We bought ourselves a kayak last Sunday! Very exciting, and I think we are going to name her "Miranda", after a funny sea witch in a musical we saw. (Pascal got to play a "breeze" in the musical "Listen to the Wind", so we got to see it in Auckland a couple weeks ago). I was also pushing for a Maori name like "Atamarie", which means sun rising, "Pakehekea", which is a sea god, or "Kura", which means treasure. But I think the family is leaning towards Miranda. I was just a tiny bit skeptical, because Miranda the sea witch liked to "rock and roll in a hole in the bottom of the sea". I hope our Miranda has no such ambitions! We want our Miranda to stay afloat, thank you very much!

It's a little too cold still, to properly take her out, but we'll get there soon. Right now, the kids enjoy racing her against speed boats... in the garage. They are very strong paddlers, and usually win with Miranda (below) :-)

By the way, Dave was humiliated by us when we went to buy it. He has much more business sense than we do, and was looking forward to some good haggling, but when we got there, the kids and I expressed our definite approval, Isaac started loading the paddles into the car, and I immediately whipped out the $600 asking price. We didn't leave much opportunity for Dave to negotiate, poor guy, especially because he obviously wanted it too, but they did throw in two life jackets for us, and it is practically new (and about 1/2 of the price of a new one). We're all pretty happy with it, and Dave can always use us as an excuse on why he wasn't able to get an even better deal on it. It wasn't his fault! :-)
