Turns out that fishing isn't so hard after all. The family record is a 45cm snapper caught on squid. Snapper is our new favorite food.

Orienteering
Note that this entry is also by Isaac
In the weekend I went out of Waiheke and into Auckland! We drove and drove. Finally we were there! A wide open field and that field was big all right. And that field and that field was a.... an orienteering field! If you ask me what orienteering means it means that you split you up with people in your family. One has the compass and one has a map of the field and that map has lines that move with the compass so then you know where you are unless you are not on the path. There are numbers on the map because you have this thing you put on your middle finger and beep it on these things that have circles on the map.
Bryon and Pascal introduced us to this great sport and it's been a fabulous weekend family activity. It's a treasure hunt through a forest where we try to locate as many of these checkpoints as we can within 90 minutes. You get points for each control you "beep", and you lose points if you're late.
I love wandering through a forest, and searching for controls is extra incentive. We've done three of them so far. The first one was through a dense forest (pictures here). The second one was wide open fields (described above), and the third one was on very steep terrain in both forest and open areas.
This is also an athletic event. The winners are usually very fit, sprinting from control to control, gracefully leaping the electric fences, and can usually find all 30 controls within the time limit. We're not there yet, but we'll have fun in the mean time.

Jellyfish and Te Arai Point
Note that this contribution comes from Isaac.

One day I went to the beach and there were lots of jelly fish. For staers I saw one then tow then a lot. I ran to my dad to pick up the jellyfish but he only brot tow of the Big ones. I wantied him to Bring all of them so I made eros {arrows} in the sand around the jelly fish and the eros led to the jelly fish wenn I was finished macking the eros I told my dad to foleo the eroes and Pick up all the jellyfish by the eros.

Now notes from his mom..
We went to Te Arai Point a couple of weeks ago over the kids' spring break and stayed in a bach with Amy, Bryon, Pascal, Helen and Andrew. If you ever get to scheme a trip with these guys, you know you're going to have a good time and some good eating. We had a wonderful time with some fantastic food (tamales, which I hope to make into a new Easter tradition) and an Easter egg hunt. The beach was absolutely amazing, with huge waves, and obviously, I guess the jelly fish made an impression. :-)
Fortunately, most of them didn't sting (you could swish your hands through the water and grab huge handfuls of them). Nikolas did get slashed by one, though, that hurt and left parallel whelps on his leg. Fortunately Dave had a full bladder (one should always have either vinegar or a full bladder when playing in jellyfish waters). It worked and they were on their way!

Here Bryon is with the "catch of the day". A bee-a-uuu-tiful kingfish which was delicious. Talk about providing for the family (and grateful friends). Excellent!

Hey Utah, its not snowing in Auckland and the water is warm enough for a quick 2km swim after walking Isaac to the bus stop. Jenn and Nikolas are on a school field trip to Goat Island for snorkeling. The curriculum here just rocks. And even better, the principal sent home a letter discussing the pros and cons of homework and said it is not compulsory, especially if it results in kid / family stress that is counterproductive to learning. Meanwhile Nik's peers at Edith Bowen Lab School are learning about Father Escalante and Utah history...and he's off blowing bubbles and looking at fish :)
P.S. Nik does read about 50 pages of Harry Potter / night, composes stories, and plays math games. I'm OK with schoolwork staying at school.

Sleeping babies are especially cute.
Ouch!
Oh, and a word on Kiwi customer service. I love it... It's phenomenal, very friendly and sincere.. That is... when you can get it at all. Unfortunately, my car was in a pickle Thursday evening at about 5:45 pm. The phone number for the towing truck company was out of service, I tried three different numbers for AA (the NZ version of AAA), and not only was there no answer, but not even an answering machine. I did manage to get hold of a mechanic at home, who paged his towing truck person, but they never got back to me. After several hours of waiting, and realizing that there was no towing truck coming that night, I put the hazard lights on and got a ride home with Rudy. Dave biked over the next morning (about 8:30) and it took until about noon to get the car out. Then Dave's foot. I first took him over to the local hospital, where we found out that the foot was probably broken, but there wasn't an X-ray machine on the island that day to assess the real damage. (Apparently, there is only an X-ray machine every other weekday). So to get an X-ray, which the local doctor recommended, he needed to take the next ferry over to Auckland and then take a cab to the hospital. They put him in a temporary cast, gave him some crutches, and I drove him home so he could shower and rinse the salt water off before the ferry. I insisted that he get to the ferry pretty early (like 7 whole minutes!), even though Dave hates showing up early and is even known to jump on the ferry while it was pulling away. (I begged him not to try it with crutches though). So anyway, the good news is, that after 20 hours since breaking his foot, we learned that his foot is merely broken, but it doesn't require any surgery. Yay!
Ah well. It sure looked like he was having fun before the accident. Check out the video! It was a fast day at Surfdale.

Whanganui
Kayaking the Whanganui was incredible! Of course, I love these friends, so just hanging out would have been a blast, but add adrenaline rush rapids (ok, it doesn't take much white water to get my heart rate up, but this was great!) and then! when the water was placid, to look up and realize that you were in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Wow. Well, it was amazing. Fantastic weekend.

Isaac's Birthday Beach Party
Isaac requested a pineapple upside cake, which was the cake my mom always made for my birthdays; Whew! I'm glad he wanted a cake I knew how to make, and this one turned out especially good! It was way too windy to light the candles (oh, we tried, but couldn't do it), but he did get to blow out the big "7" candle. Actually, while we were cleaning up, we noticed the seagulls had all started in on the cake, so no left overs there.
Going after the "Dickey Moe" pinata with a cricket bat and a grocery bag as a blind fold. This was probably the highlight for the kids as they all took turns going after it, although Dave and I wondered if we really should be encouraging to kids to hit a whale as hard as they could. Oh well. Dickey Moe was one tough whale, and it took a big 13 year brother to finally whack it hard enough to break it. (This pinata was built and re-enforced by engineers).
One final thing. The day started out windy! (Check out the video). Dave took a few hours break for wind surfing. It had to be done! I thought we might need to move the party to our house, but Little Oneroa was protected and by evening it had calmed down to breezy.
